- Locum Veterinarian Consultant
Description
STS, a USDA-registered research facility with an AAALAC-accredited animal care and use program, is engaging licensed veterinarians to provide on-site veterinary support for animal use under an IACUC-approved protocol. You will direct anesthesia, analgesia, and euthanasia, safeguard animal welfare, and manage controlled substances under your own DEA registration, consistent with the Animal Welfare Act and the AVMA Guidelines for the Euthanasia of Animals. Veterinarians of all backgrounds are welcome to apply. You will receive on-the-job familiarization during each course and work alongside an experienced team, so prior experience in this setting is not required.
- Day rate: $1,500 per day
Per authorized on-site day of veterinary support. - Medication fee: 100% reimbursement plus 10% handling
For medications requested for the engagement. - Travel day: $250 per travel day
When one-way travel exceeds 250 miles from the primary residence, for actual travel days only. - Per diem (M&IE): GSA rate for the duty location (FY2026 CONUS standard $68 per day)
For authorized overnight travel more than 75 one-way miles from residence. First and last days paid at 75%. - Lodging: Arranged and paid by organization.
For authorized overnight travel. - POV mileage: GSA rate ($0.725 per mile as of January 1, 2026)
For travel exceeding 50 one-way miles. $0.205 per mile when a furnished vehicle is available.
Immediate assignment in the San Miguel, CA area on July 12 and 13, 2026, with regular assignments across the country on a rolling basis.
Requirements
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or Veterinariae Medicinae Doctoris (VMD) from an accredited institution.
- Current, unrestricted license to practice veterinary medicine in a U.S. state, sufficient to support DEA registration. Because assignments are mostly conducted on federal property, licensure in the specific state where an assignment takes place is not required.
- Current U.S. DEA registration and ability to order / receive controlled medications (Schedule III)
- No pending or unresolved disciplinary action, investigation, or restriction by any veterinary licensing board or regulatory authority.
